Mimi So

Mimi So is known as one of the world's greatest designers in both jewelry and fashion.  Her brand is based in New York City, but her clients are found across the globe wearing only the finest luxury in exclusive, high- fashion retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Holt Renfrew, and Lane Crawford. 

Mimi So herself has been involved in jewelry her entire life, having grown up in New York City with immigrated parents from China.  Although her family struggled initially, they eventually opened three jewelry stores in Chinatown, where Mimi grew up seeing, hearing about, and working around precious stones and metals.  She helped out in her family's shop along with her older brother and sister at the very young age of only eight years old. 

Mimi eventually went on to study at Parson's School of Design in New York with an interest in graphic design. Upon graduation, she found work at an advertising agency but had to return to manage the family business due to her mother’s sudden illness. Then, in 1988, Mimi opened up her own store on the corner of 5th Avenue and 47th Street in Manhattan’s Diamond District.  Mimi started building a celebrity clientele, beginning with world famous clients such as David Bowie and Iman.  Soon after, her limited edition designs were featured and worn by the cast of Sex and the City. 

Mimi’s increasingly expanding spotlight caught the eye of Neiman Marcus, and from this point on her path to superstardom rose exponentially.  Her deal with Neiman Marcus started in a test location in 2002, and eventually increased to fifteen jewelry salons.  Then, in 2004, the conglomerate Compagnie Financiére Richemont formed a joint venture with Mimi, forming the company Mimi So International.  This venture put her on a global scale in locations such as New York, Beverly Hills, Tokyo, and Japan.  Only three years later, in 2007, Mimi bought out Richemont’s shares in her company, and continued to design works for Cartier, Piaget, and Montblanc. In 2012, Mimi was a featured designer for the De Beers Forevermark Diamond Campaign.

Mimi’s accomplishments are numerous and impressive, and according to Mimi, her “happiness is creating beauty for others to admire and enjoy.” Today, she serves on the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) board of directors and continues her entrepreneurial dream of creating a world-renowned, internationally recognized brand.
